Chapter 31: Battle of the Royal City

As soon as we reached the gates, we immediately abandoned our carriage and continued on horseback.
It had been a few minutes since Ines and I had split up from Sensei, and I was beginning to worry that we might’ve been too late.
As soon as we entered the city gates, large piles of rubble immediately came flying towards us from the center of the kingdom.
A large cloud of dust was rising there—that surely must be where sensei is right now.
You couldn’t even see the battle from where we were standing; you could only see the signs of the ongoing destruction that was taking place. Every time the dragon took a step, a loud echo would be sent across the kingdom, creating shockwaves that would break dozens of buildings and houses almost instantly.
Most impressive, however, was the incredibly powerful magical aura that had engulfed the surrounding area, probably a side-effect of the dragon’s fire breath.
Many rays of magical light were emitted from the city’s center, piercing the black veil that had blanketed the sky and setting ablaze the distant plains.
It was almost impossible for me to believe what was happening.
To go head to head against that dragon…
It was unheard of.
And yet, it was unmistakable.
Noru was certainly fighting that thing right now.
He was so dreamlike—as though he was a character that had somehow escaped from a children’s book.
“Rin! Look!”
I turned around upon hearing Ines’ voice and was shocked by what I saw.
Behind us were three goblin emperors.
They had formed some sort of party, and had begun running towards us.
“…???”
One of them split from the rest, stopping to scoop up piles of rubble from the ground and chuck it at us.
There was no time to hesitate.
“Divine Shield!”
Ines defended us from the goblin’s projectiles using her shield.
However, her ability wasn’t able to block all of the rubble, and our horse had been struck by the flying rocks, crushing its head.
We fell off of the horse and were thrown at the ground.
“Get behind me!”
In the time that it took for me and Ines to regain our footing, the goblin emperors had significantly closed the gap and were now standing right in front of us, ready to attack at any moment.
“Divine Shield!”
Again, Ines blocked the goblins’ advances using her ability.
“Thank you, Ines.”
“Don’t thank me yet.”
Ines’ voice was emotionless.
I examined our surroundings.
There was still much more work to be done.
We were now completely surrounded.
Even Noru had trouble dealing with one goblin emperor, so what more of us?
I felt so powerless that I wanted to surrender.
I became so frightened, so engulfed with fear, that my legs became unresponsive.
We couldn’t escape.
We couldn’t run away.
If Sensei was here, what would he do?
If Sensei was here, what would he say?
“Don’t be afraid, it’s just a goblin…” I muttered to myself silently.
As soon as I spoke those words, the trembling in my feet subsided and I began to regain control of my body again.
This was it.
Right now, Sensei was fighting the Dragon of Despair, which was probably the strongest being on this earth.
If I was going to be his apprentice, I couldn’t be afraid of measly goblins.
I’m sure he’d be proud of me after this.
“Ines, let’s calm down, take this step by step.”
“Yes, princess.”
“Icicle Dance!”
Using my abilities, I materialized countless blocks of ice from thin air, using it to attack the goblins.
However, they were too quick.
No matter how many I threw at them, they’d always dodge.
A cold sweat broke out on my forehead.
“…Stop…”
Lolo, who had been following us all this time, jumped straight into the battlefield.
“Don’t… move…”
At that exact instant, all movement from the goblin emperors halted.
Now’s our chance.
“Icicle dance!”
I immediately sent a huge chunk of ice flying towards one of the immobilized goblins’ feet, destroying its legs and anchoring it to the ground.
“They’ll come back soon, Ines, hurry! Your sword!”
“Yes!”
Ines withdrew her shield, unveiling her “Sword of Light.”
“Divine Sword!”
A bright light had blinded me momentarily, and when it had subsided, I saw that the goblin’s head had been cut off.
At the same time, a clean line had been made through the surrounding houses, cutting them in half.
“That’s one.”
After confirming that the goblin emperor was indeed dead, Ines sheathed her sword.
“God Sword” Ines.
That was another title that had been given to Ines alongside “God Shield.”
Alongside her Shield of Light, her Sword of Light was also one of her most potent and recognizable abilities.
It was an extremely powerful blade that could even cut through armor made of pure orichalcum.
“Two more to go.”
We simultaneously looked up to the sky.
The two remaining goblin emperors had jumped up high into the air, avoiding Ines’ attack.
As they landed, Ines again blocked their attacks using her Divine Shield as Lolo immobilized them.
“… Don’t…move!”
Both giants immediately stopped dead in their tracks, precisely as ordered.
This boy… he had so much power.
To think that this child had been afraid of us just a little while ago.
No wonder the devilspawn was such a feared race all across the world.
This child really was something else.
“Ice Hell.”
I used my abilities to freeze the ground, turning our opponents into ice statues.
Immediately after, Ines used her Divine Sword to eliminate the remaining goblin emperors with ease.
As soon as we were able to think straight again, we realized that the noises coming from the center of the kingdom had stopped.
“Sensei?”
It had finished.
The battle between man and dragon.
The absence of noise meant only one thing—that the battle had reached a conclusion.
One of them had been crowned the victor.
“Ines, Lolo, let’s hurry. He might need our help.”
“Yes,” they chanted in unison.
